Are you interested in the topic of transshipment terminals? You should first read the knowledge we have prepared for you. Read basic information about the terminals.

Specifics of transshipment

A change in the mode of transport or, as in the case of railroads, a change in the track gauge have a direct impact on the need to transship goods. There are several types of transshipment depending on the vehicle transporting the goods.

Transhipment can take place when goods are transferred from one mode of transport to another. It also occurs when goods are stored and temporarily kept on another means of transport

Types of transshipment

Due to the different characteristics of transshipment companies, several different types of transshipment can be distinguished:

  • transshipment from truck to rail, such as wagon, platform, special yard, or container, and vice versa;
  • transshipment from sea containers to another type of transport, e.g. rail or road, and vice versa;
  • transshipment of goods from broad gauge rail cars to narrow gauge rail cars and vice versa;
  • transshipment from rail yard to ships or ferries with subsequent shipment by sea transport and vice versa.

Types of transshipment terminals

A transshipment terminal is a special place where the mode of transport is changed for the goods to be transshipped. It is part of the transport system for many logistic activities. The terminal is equipped with reloading equipment, and also serves for storage of cargo units.

One of the characteristic features of reloading terminals is their very large area. The location of terminals in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings causes many inconveniences. Generated noise and vehicle traffic has a very negative impact on the comfort of residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. Excessive traffic in a given area significantly deteriorates the capacity of local roads, which makes life more difficult for residents. Transshipment terminals also increase noise and air pollution.

In this case it is necessary to locate the terminals in the vicinity of, for example, expressways, fast roads or railroad tracks. The best locations are industrial zones, where the market can potentially be the largest, and with the right logistics, the pace and efficiency of work at the terminal increases. This contributes to economic development.

Size of transshipment terminals

One of the criteria for dividing transshipment terminals is their size. They can be either small, medium, large or very large. The unit of capacity in transportation is the so-called TEU value, which indicates the size of the logistics facility. Small terminals do not exceed a value of five thousand TEU. Very large terminals are characterized by much higher capacity value, which often exceeds 40 thousand TEU

Location of terminals

An important factor affecting the operation of transhipment terminals is their location. The most important of them are rail-road terminals and facilities on the territory of river, sea and air ports.

Transshipment equipment and management

Terminals have a wide variety of cargo handling equipment. These facilities can also be divided based on how they are managed. First, they may be used by only one customer or they may be used by a specific logistics operator. In yet another situation, terminals may be operated by an independent operator. Terminals can be operated by facilities that are located within the Logistics Center.

Nowadays, transport and its types are already at such a developed level that highly advanced logistic solutions are needed. This also applies to cargo handling operations. A transshipment center should be the best possible fit for the current situation. This can be achieved by selecting the best terminal equipment that will ensure fast, efficient reloading and delivery of selected goods from one place to another. This is a very important part of the economy, without which transportation would not be as effective and efficient.
