Transshipment terminals are places where cargo is transferred from one mode of transport to another. For this to be possible, the terminal must be equipped with appropriate machinery and equipment

What is a transshipment terminal?

A transshipment terminal is a facility where the transfer of cargo from one means of transport to another takes place. We can distinguish, among others, a port reloading terminal, where the cargo is reloaded from ship to land means of transport. In reloading terminals there are also designated places for storing and keeping containers. In addition, sorting, labeling and distribution are often carried out within the facilities. The terminals in question must be properly equipped to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Here are some of the most basic pieces of equipment that are essential for any container handling terminal.

  1. Container cranes

Container cranes are equipment that is a must for container terminals. Thanks to them, the time for unloading and loading is maximally reduced. They enable effective work, all thanks to extremely innovative and functional solutions. Container cranes can be divided into two types – RTG and RMG. The former are gantry cranes on rubber wheels, while the latter – gantry cranes on rails. How do these machines work? Special operators are employed to operate RTG cranes. Their task is to manipulate the machine in order to load containers from terminal tractors to another location and vice versa. RTG cranes are usually driven by a diesel engine. When it comes to the second type of container cranes, the RMG, things are a little different. These are 100 percent electrified and typically offer more capabilities than operator-controlled cranes

  1. Container cranes

Container trucks are specialized machines that are used to load various types of containers onto trains, ships, ferries or trucks. Their capabilities at transhipment terminals are significantly limited compared to, for example, overhead cranes or cranes, but nevertheless they are one of the most important pieces of equipment in any such facility. The biggest problem for this equipment is the handling of heavy loads, but nevertheless they cope quite well. To deal with this challenge, a counterweight is used to effectively keep the unit balanced during handling. Container trucks can be divided into several types, but the basic division includes trucks for empty and full containers. The primary difference is the maximum lifting capacity

  1. Header Container Trolleys

Header trucks are the most common pieces of equipment at transshipment terminals when it comes to mobile machinery. The design of these vehicles is relatively simple. Characteristic elements are the mast and the forks with 1.2 metre tine spacing. These devices are characterized by extraordinary functionality and versatility. They are perfect for work in all circumstances. They are very often used, for example, when maneuvering between narrow tracks

  1. Harbour cranes

Cranes are very specialistic devices which are an inseparable element of port reloading terminals. Their primary task is to handle containers from ships and ferries to land and vice versa. Due to their complex design, the reloading capacity is very high. They can rotate around their own axis, lift and lower loads, change the inclination of the boom, and also move along the quay.

  1. Haulage trucks

Haulage trucks are vehicles that are designed to transport very heavy and bulky cargo. Thanks to these devices practically everything can be transported. They are very often used in places such as reloading terminals or logistic centers. They ensure efficient and effective transport of the handled loads. Transport trucks consist of a load-bearing part, which is usually a steel construction of a certain strength, and a top attached to it. Another important element of their construction is the wheel system, which is driven externally
